Making your White Elephant Gift stand out.

As the official royal party planner in a palace where white elephants are regarded with great respect and awe, I am often approached by civilians asking me how to shop for a white elephant gift that is going to be a hit at their next gift exchange party.

My advice is always the same: don’t just bring junk! Really, I can’t stress this enough. Imagine the hurt feelings of someone who has put a lot of time and effort into shopping for a really thoughtful gift, and yet has ended up leaving the party with a cheap, tacky and just plain mean gift like a roll of toilet paper. Unless the host of the party has specifically stated that this is to be a theme party where all gifts must cost no more than a couple of dollars and be as silly and tacky as possible, you should try to shop for a white elephant gift that you yourself wouldn’t mind ending up with.

Nice and Unusual

Nice and Unusual

If there’s a theme at the gift exchange party, then shop accordingly. If there’s a stated budget, try to spend within it. Those two should be obvious! But how do you make your white elephant gift stand out? The best tip is to know your audience. If your party is taking place in a church setting, for example, don’t buy anything that you’d be embarrassed for the pastor to end up with! Consider the group of people at your party, and think about shared interests or hobbies, experiences you’ve had together, and so on – anything that will help you to come up with a gift that the majority of guests will appreciate.

Also, a little bit of creativity and imagination go a long way when shopping for a white elephant party gift. It’s boring to end up with a plain old gift voucher. But how about buying a voucher of lesser value, and then adding some thoughtful accessories? For example, instead of just buying a voucher for Starbucks, try putting it inside a novelty mug, along with a few cinnamon sticks and good quality candies, and tying it up with ribbons. Your gift will instantly be more desirable!

Maybe It’s National White Elephant Day…

OrangeCandyPeel2

We Have a Holiday for These!

Traditionally, white elephant parties are held over the winter holidays. It’s a popular Christmas party game amongst office workers, and also for families – particularly those who don’t often see each other throughout the year. But does it have to be limited to Christmas time?

Of course not! You can have a white elephant gift exchange party for any occasion – or for none at all. Maybe it could become your family’s way of meeting up regularly throughout the year, or simply a fun way of entertaining your friends once in a while.

However, if you need a little guidance, there’s always some holiday at any given time, which you can easily use as an excuse for a party. Hey, it’s National Candied Orange Peel Day! It’s Mother Goose Day! It’s National Brownie Day! Let’s have a party!

These are all real occasions, and they can be a great source of inspiration for the theme of your party. You can look up lists of wacky national holidays online – you’re sure to find something that tickles your fancy!

But of course, there are always the other major holidays, aside from Christmas. An Easter white elephant party, for example, can be really good fun. You could have everyone look for the most unusual chocolate egg/bunny/figure that they can find, and bring that as their gift. Or maybe you don’t have a particular gift theme, but the party venue could be decorated with spring flowers (think snowdrops and daffodils) and everyone could bring a hand-decorated egg to hang on a decorative “Easter tree”. You could even bend the white elephant game rules a bit, and turn it into more of an Easter egg hunt – maybe each guest in turn has to hunt for a gift before the usual trading and stealing process begins?

With a little imagination, you can turn your white elephant gift exchange into a party suitable for any occasion – and have a whole lot of fun in the process. Feel free to share your own variations for non-Christmas versions of the game. Give someone else some inspiration!
