Facebook engagement at 143 pages per month
It has been reported that Facebook continues to build strong engagement statistics . AllFacebook announced that the number one social network is now gathering an average of 143 pages viewed per user, every month. This represents a huge lead over other web properties.
Our family knows about engaging websites that draw us back time and time again. For the past 4-years we have gathered online to share gifts and conversation for a few days before Christmas.
We all live in different parts of the country so we can only get together on the internet. Our family game makes us feel closer when we can’t gather in real life.
Here are the statistics of this engaging party:
… 11 players participated for 19 days.
… 789 comment visits were made to the party page
… 67 pictures where gathered from Google images where linked to the party.
… 37 videos where gathered from YouTube into the activity.
It is not possible to know the actual page views that the game creates, but we each spent a great deal of effort and time to stay engaged.
It is a great blessing that the internet has provided us the opportunity become engaged with any of our family and friends, and the latest numbers from Facebook is just one more illustration that we all want to stay connected.

Happy Birthday Facebook
This has been an interesting year for the rambunctious infant business, Facebook. Like any two-year-old they have moved everything in the room up at least one level.
When a toddler comes into our house we immediately move up the knickknacks and put the door locks on the cabinet doors. If we don’t, they would be into everything!
Facebook has moved from crawling to sprinting around our internet houses like a whirl-wind. And this growth spurt has caused some growth pains for many.
But like any birth date, we should celebrate what has been accomplished in the last 12 months, and then look forward to what might be ahead.
Nick O’Neill of AllFacebook said it best: “While the past year has been a bumpy one, hanging on to the rocket that is Facebook has no doubt proven to be an exciting ride”!
Happy Birthday Facebook…. We should throw you a party…
Maybe a huge gift exchange? I know of an application that would be just the ticket!
And it is on Facebook….

E cards bring real life into the online human party
E cards are everywhere on the internet, but Allfacebook picked a few cleaver cards to display on their blog this week. One of them caught my attention and got me thinking about life in this new century.
It must have captured blog contributor Raj Dash’s thinking as well because he suggested, “… publishers like Someecards get to the heart of the human condition about our social media addictions, especially to Facebook”.
Here is the card that started this →
The modern human condition includes several issues addressed in this statement.
First, we want to be supportive and contribute to the quality of life for of our family and friends. Birthdays and other significant life events lead us to find ways to reach out and be more supportive.
Second, we are moving at a fast pace, so we are continuously exploring ways to trim time out of all of our efforts. When we find a way to become more efficient, we attempt to move some of our tasks into these tools.
Last, Facebook represents an efficiency tool, as well as a bridge spanning great distances. Support for family and friends is enhanced when this internet tool is applied to both local and distant personal connections. We can now feel more involved in the lives of those whom we feel close.
The cleaver statements from Someecards are part of a support structure that the internet is now making more convenient for millions of people. As time goes by, more and more applications will be developed for the sole purpose of spreading friendship and love among people who care for one another. Giving is becoming easier, even when distance keeps us all apart.
We welcome the new sharing tools…. What do you share with friends online?

They want to send you Valentine gifts!
Valentine’s Day is a big gift giving holiday, with 2010 gift sales sitting at about $14 billion for the period, according to the National Retail Federation.
This is not nearly as big as Christmas, but plenty of volume to make every retailer take notice.
And it is not just gifts that sell for this season…. Valentine cards are sent at a rate of 152 million a year according Hallmark.
Like Christmas, the giving is shared widely between family and friends, with many gatherings scheduled to share in the experience.
Adding to the regular activities is the social networks who have really embraced the Valentine’s Day giving period this year. According to a report published by Allfacebook, the virtual world has been very active this February, sharing everything from a virtual Love-o-meter to Valentine’s Day Massacres within the games on Facebook.
What is interesting is that we have moved less than 50 days down the calendar since Christmas and we are still shopping for ways to support each other through gift giving.
There should be no question that gift retailing is one of the serious economic drivers in our economy and presents some great opportunities, both on and off line.
This year, we are witnessing how Valentine’s Day is a serious driver of the virtual economy on Facebook as well. FarmVille players have already sent more valentines in 18 hours than all the Hallmark V-day cards sent last year!
Retailers and game developers are moving to take advantage of our human desire to be generous with those whom we love. The sales numbers for gifts, cards and virtual fluff is just further proof that gift giving remains a strong social glue.
The question remains: Who will make the sweetheart deals and applications that will combine social networks with real gift sharing between family and friends?

Facebook had a Semi-Successful Christmas
The holidays have ended and most of the predictions have been published. We now start the process of measuring the results and doing comparisons. We list the winners and the losers, the business gains or losses, and start analyzing what caused it all to turn out the way it did.
There is one measurement that I have been interested in this year:
How did Facebook do?
Particularly; how did this social network do in the most social period of the year; Christmas?
Well, according to Allfacebook, the season was bright for Facebook this Christmas. Not only did they end the year with great user growth, but they claimed the title of the most visited site on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day and beat the mighty Google…
Why did a network that connects people from remote locations do so well on these two days? I believe that there is connection between the holiday based upon sharing and our human tendency to reach out to those we love during important life events.
Millions entered Facebook on those two days because they wanted to share in the lives of friends and family. They craved an opportunity to reclaim an old memory or to add a new one. They believed that others would be there, and they joined them in a virtual gathering place, as a substitute for real human contact. If you can’t be together in person, then a virtual meet-up is a viable substitute.
This technology is a gift, and it is understandable that on the two most gift-focused days of the year, we would open this network and share in the experience with others.
I have long believed that Facebook is similar to a traditional Christmas party, where the host has a huge address book and owns an enormous hall for gathering people together. Once invited to this party, a guest finds a group of friends, family or acquaintances and begins one of many conversations.
There are loosely organized activities that facilitate interaction between the participants. There are tables set-up around the hall displaying various board games that appeal to many interests. There are name tags and scrapbooks to assist in doing introductions or starting discussions.
This huge Christmas party has a grasious host who allows almost anyone to enter the hall and enjoy the event.
There is one thing missing from the party…
It is the thing that drives retail sales in the 4th quarter of every year. It is what we measure much of US retail sales against.
It is the gifts….
Facebook has the party atmosphere and facilities set-up pretty well, but the gifts are missing.
It could be argued that they have a huge gift system, and they do… But they are virtual gifts… They aren’t real.
On Christmas Eve and Christmas Day, the real world gathers in homes and halls to share real gifts to demonstrate real support and love. Real Christmas parties involve gifts that can be felt, both physically and emotionally.
Facebook did win the key-stroke measurement contest on Christmas Eve and Day, but they missed the opportunity to pass out of the presents.
How could that be fixed?

Stay with personal connections
I am continuing to document the kindness of strangers; who give of themselves so that others can find success in the social web.
You have got to love the person who can use a great play on words to make a point. Jesse Stay was born with a leg up in this department. His blog is called Stay ‘N’ Alive and he works in the social connection industry, helping others stay alive in this space. (He also went on a STAYcation with his family last year, but that is a different story).
Jesse has kindly taken time to assist us in determining how we should deploy AlbinoPhant online. His recommendations, plus those of other thought leaders, have lead us to build a Facebook application for a white elephant gift exchange party.
From the first meeting, and even through BlogWorld this past week, Jesse has offered up his personal connections to assist in our efforts. (Disclosure: We will be hiring Jesse as a consultant, but he has shared without compensation) Early on he recommended that we read the blogs of Nick O’neill and Justin Smith to learn what Facebook is doing. He suggested that his friend Louis Gray should be followed, and we have. These recommendations from Jesse’s to his personal connections have elevated our game and assisted us to STAY on track (sorry Jesse couldn’t help using the play on words here).
At BlogWorld, we renewed our acquaintance, and then Jesse continued to use his personal connections to move our story along. He talked about the online white elephant party with Steve Rubel, who met me to learn more and to get one of the PhartEphants. He connected me with Rachael Herrscher who runs TodaysMama.com, saying her audience would be a great fit for online parties that connect families. And, he delivered one of our stuffed elephants with a T-shirt to Louis Gray.
These kind acts from well connected people have blessed our efforts and renewed my faith in the goodness of people. AlbinoPhant will have a better chance to Stay alive and grow because someone has shared their personal connections with me.
Who is helping you stay connected? Are you sharing your connections with others?
