The address was 2010

coolFor 23-years we raised our children in Cool, California…
It is the town where I was raised; located in the Gold Country of California and just across the river from the community in which Sarah grew up.

We returned to the Foothills of the Sierras when our children were very young and built a home at 2010 Upper Black Rock Road. christensen

For many years, a stone with etched numbers and letters hung at the entry of our drive. When we sold the home, our youngest son and his wife hung the old sign at their home just 15-miles up the road.

We have been gone from the Cool home for over 6-years now, but during our time in Cool, the address number meant only a way for people to find us… Until this year…

A facebook post by our son on January 1st read:

This was the old road sign from the house in Cool. I’ve had it since mom and dad moved. It was on a tree at the end of my driveway. A storm blew it off the tree and it broke. So I set it in concrete and finished it with pea gravel. I was looking at it the other day and it dawned on me that the address was 2010. I then had a great feeling overwhelm me that this our year. 2010 is the year for the Christensen family. Just thought I would share this with everyone. Happy New Year.

It is strange to look at a picture the old sign and then reflect on the memories that the address holds for Sarah and I…

It is now 2010, just like our old address, and our children are building their own memories at several different addresses across the country.

This rock sign, broken and repaired, represents so many great events and an enduring love. It is nice that it has been preserved to witness many more great memories…
We wish each of you a Happy and Memorable 2010!

Is there any money in Parties?

The Party Money Tree

Americans find a way to enjoy the company of family and friends during the holidays. They share gifts and the go to parties to be with, and to support each other socially.

But is there any money to be made servicing the party goers? Do Americans spend their money to attend parties?

We and American Express agree that the money is there…

And if a research study by the American Express company is any indication, the party spending is very big.

The December American Express Spending & Saving Tracker 2009 reports that, “In addition to spending money on gifts, consumers also plan to spend money on parties related to Christmas as well as New Year’s Eve. More than to-thirds (69%)  plan to celebrate the holidays with family and friends, and 90% of them plan to make purchases related to festivities.

If this study is correct, then about 207,000,000 people will join in some sort of party with family and friends during the holidays. And further math would suggest that 186 million will spend money for something to bring to the party.

There is a lot of Partying going on! And a bunch of money is being spent as well….

Both brick and mortar and online e-tailers benefit from the sales to these festivity participants.  But the online merchants seem to be smiling the brightest this holiday season.  It is a fact that many retailers make or break their year based upon the sales results between Thanksgiving and New Years.  It appears that parties play a big role in fueling their sales.

This same tracking survey showed that 79% of consumers will use the internet as a tool for holiday shopping, with 45% planning to make a purchase online.

So,  it appears that without the party, the holidays may not be all that fun…  at least financially and socially.

The following is a list of popular parties from a Party Planner site.

All of these events pluck some money from the Party Money Tree…

  • Anniversary party
