Bring them out of the shell

Every party host worries in case their guests don’t have a good time. It’s only natural – you want to be remembered as a great host, and for that to happen, people have to enjoy the party!

And if some of your guests don’t know each other very well (or at all), you might be concerned about how everyone will get along. Will the conversation be awkward? Will there be uncomfortable silences?

Fortunately, it’s really easy to make sure that this doesn’t happen, and that everyone relaxes and has fun. As the AlbinoPhant royal party planner, I’ve been looking into ways of hosting a white elephant party designed to prompt interesting conversations, make people laugh, and get your guests comfortable with each other. So, if you have a group of guests who don’t know each other, why not make your party a white elephant ice breaker party?

First of all, send out invitations that let people know the theme of the white elephant party: “ice breakers”. Tell everyone to bring a gift – something fun, suitable for everyone, and within a price range set by you, the host. As each guest arrives, place a colored dot on each gift, with the colors each representing a different Ice Breaker activity that you’ve previously assigned to them. Now the fun can begin! The white elephant game is played as usual, but instead of a wrapped gift being opened straight away, the player must first perform the Ice Breaker associated with that gift. And don’t worry about people missing out on Ice Breaker activities if they choose to steal an opened gift rather than unwrap a new one – if someone steals, then they must perform the same Ice Breaker before they can take the gift!

Try it – it’s a really fun way of getting people to interact and have fun. As a slight variation, you could make the rule that the person opening the gift can choose someone else to perform the Ice Breaker instead! However you choose to do it, it’s sure to generate some laughs and lots of banter. And if you need some inspiration, check out my list of Ice Breaker activities to get you started…
